University of Cumbria opens Ultrasound Skills Lab with six ScanTrainers

MedaPhor Group plc is pleased to announce that the University of Cumbria has officially opened its Ultrasound Skills Lab complete with six ScanTrainer Professional systems.

The Ultrasound Skills Lab, based at the University’s Lancaster campus, was officially opened by the University’s vice-chancellor Professor Peter Strike, but has been welcoming students since January when the University took on its first cohort of students into its brand new Direct Entry Medical Ultrasound MSc course. As the NHS faces a growing skills shortage the course, the first of its kind to be launched in the UK, is aimed at making sonography a more accessible career option for graduates who may not have come from a clinical background.

Gareth Bolton, Senior Lecturer and Ultrasound Course Leader, comments:

“There is a national shortage of sonographers in the UK and we wanted to provide an additional postgraduate route into ultrasound, for those with perhaps a science related degree, not necessarily from a traditional healthcare background, to help to tackle this shortage. In order to do this effectively, we needed to source the best ultrasound training technology on the market”

‘ScanTrainer Professional is a self-learn platform which means students are able to learn basic and advanced skills at their own speed and in their own time. The wide-range of basic and advanced modules available mean that we are able to offer access to a huge range of pathologies that they just wouldn’t have had access to in training before. It’s already proving a great hit with students and staff!”

Iain Dunbar, International Sales Manager, at MedaPhor, concludes:

“The new skills lab signals that the ultrasound education industry in the UK, and across the world, is finally responding to the demand for sonography skills as ultrasound grows in popularity as a diagnostic modality. The University’s approach is truly pioneering and we are delighted to be at the forefront alongside them.”
